Oysters do wonderful things for our coastal environments. They clean the water, improve fisheries, prevent coastal erosion, support recreational & commercial fishing interests. Unfortunately, our local oyster populations have been severely degraded over the past 100 years from commercial harvesting of oyster reefs for shell material and alterations of freshwater flows. Oyster River Ecology has developed innovative oyster restoration techniques to accomplish large scale oyster habitat restoration in the Manatee River. We have set a goal to restore at least 1 acre of oyster reef per year though grass roots funding and while engaging hundreds of volunteers and youth in experiential environmental education. You can be part of the solution! Our costs for establishing oyster reefs on our fully permitted and tested sites are five dollars per square foot. For every five dollars donated you will add over 60 oysters to our reef site. Those 60 oysters are capable of filtering up to 3,000 gallons of water every day! Please consider donation to help us reach this goal, restore oyster habitat, and help clean local waterways with a natural sustainable solution!
